In our recent book we discuss 10 aspects to living out our Third Calling:
#1: Believe long life is a gift from God–to be stewarded with wisdom and imagination.
I don’t really think long life is all you’ve cracked up to be.
It actually seems pretty depressing.
This was our always-very-spiritual friend talking. How could she say such a thing—to us—the leaders of Re-Ignite? The reaction caused us pause. Are we being too optimistic about this season of life?
Like our friend, many boomers see the lengthening of our days as a curse, an unbearable burden–something to dread or try avoiding. Some deny it; others defy it. Many simply don’t want to “go there.”
Why the obstinate response? Did we really expect to be the “ageless” generation? Are we disappointed that our bodies experience aches and pain and other forms of decay? Are we resistant to the boxes our culture draws around us? Are we simply disillusioned with reality?
The questions merit lengthy theological, ethical and scientific discussion–and require more space than this newsletter affords. For now, let us encourage you to rejoice in the opportunities long life affords. If it all seems too overwhelming, break it down to accept each day as a gift. Fill one day at a time with love, attention. and gratitude.
Let us not waste the gift by focusing on limitations, but rather strive to fill our lives with purpose, meaning, and adventure.
And let your imagination run wild!
Teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom. Psalm 90:12 KJV
In our book, Third Calling: What are you doing the rest of your life?, we discuss important things to consider as you seek to live with purpose and passion. Join us in the conversation!
